Pecan Nuts

About Pecan Nuts

Pecans are native to the United States and Mexico, but they were originally grown in Central America. The nut itself has an oily seed inside called a kernel. Pecans are harvested when they are fully grown but before they start to split open from maturity.

Production

The Pecan tree is often found growing near rivers or lakes because it needs enough water to survive during dry times. It also prefers full sun exposure and sandy soil with good drainage qualities.

The Pecan tree produces flowers in late spring before producing its nuts later on in the summer months after flowering. The flowers are yellow-green with five petals or sepals around them. These flowers when pollinating during their life cycle (upwards of 200 days!) will contain one pecan seed inside. The pecans fall from the trees when they ripen. The pale brown nuts with intact shells are of good quality. While the husk which is green in color indicates that the nut inside is probably not mature and a black husk means, the nut is rotten.

Producers

Pecans grow in the southern part of the United States, in states like Texas, Florida, Georgia, and Alabama. They are also found in parts of California and Mississippi. Apart from this, South Africa also competes with these countries in terms of producing pecans.

Properties

  1. Pecans contain a lot of protein, that acts as a satisfying snack keeping humans fuller for a longer period.
  2. The monounsaturated fatty acids available in pecans are great for heart health. Also, beta carotene and vitamin E in pecans protect cells from damage, thus mitigating the effect of body inflammation.
  3. The nuts promote weight loss and maintenance because of the filling source of oleic acid, a better-for-human fat that makes you feel full while also boosting heart health.

Uses

Pecans are versatile nuts full of flavors. They are a popular nut for baking. They have a rich and nutty flavor, and they can add a hint of sweetness to your recipes. Pecans are used in baking in several ways:

Topping bread with pecans nuts is one of the easiest ways to add flavor to your baked goods. Simply spread them evenly on the top of your bread before baking, or sprinkle them on the top just before serving.

Pecans are also used as fillings for baked goods, such as cookies and cakes. Use them whole or chop them into small pieces so that they do not become too dense when cooked.

Pecan flour is also available for making muffins, pancakes, and waffles.
