Production

The hazelnuts are harvested annually in the mid-autumn. Hazelnuts grow on trees in the wild. They are harvested when they have grown to a certain size, which varies depending on the species. Before the trees produce nuts, they need to be pollinated so that their fruit will be fertile (the ripe fruits will have a hard shell). Once pollinated, the nuts will begin to develop seeds within them. The nuts are harvested after they are fully developed into nut-bearing pods, and finally, they will fall from the tree!

Producers

Hazelnuts are the small, brown nuts that grow on the hazel tree. They are a staple of British cuisine and are especially popular during the autumn season. In terms of production, Turkey remains the top producer of the world’s majority of hazelnut production. Besides this, Italy, and the USA are some other countries that contribute to the production of hazelnuts.

Properties

  • Hazelnut is an easy source of plant-based protein that is crucial for preventing cardiovascular disease. Also, the omega-3 in hazelnuts is great for providing several heart-healthy benefits.
  • Packed with vitamin E and antioxidants, they can help protect your body from damage caused by free radicals.
  • A good source of calcium, magnesium, iron, and zinc. Thus, adding hazelnuts to your diet improves bone density, helps prevent osteoporosis, and may even lower blood pressure.
  • Healthy fats present in hazelnuts play a significant role in reducing inflammation levels in the body.
  • Hazelnuts contain flavonoids which help to prevent cancer. This can be seen by the fact that they are used in treating some forms of cancer including colon cancer.

Uses

Hazelnuts are mainly used in baking recipes but can also be eaten raw or roasted. They are used in mixtures with other nuts, like pecans and almonds. They can also be used as a substitute for flour in baking recipes that call for flour. The most common use is to add flavor and richness to a dessert.

They are also great for adding texture to baked products. Use them in everything from marzipan to cakes, cookies, biscotti, and even cookies! Enjoy the chocolates with hazelnut flavor since chocolate and hazelnuts make a wonderful pairing. Also, use hazelnuts as an ingredient in other recipes that call for nuts or ground nuts.

Also, they go well with savory dishes like seafood, salads, pesto, and even pizza. They are used to flavor liqueur and to make hazelnut butter, a spread similar to peanut butter.
