Production
Cashew nuts can be produced from fruit-producing trees. A cashew nut is a seed that grows on cashew apples, a bell pepper-shaped fruit. Cashew Nuts are harvested in the fall. The nuts grow on trees that can live for centuries and need to be harvested before the tree’s fruit falls from it. To get cashews, cashew trees are planted cashew trees not just cashew trees; they have to be species of the genus Anacardium. And when the cashews are ready for harvest (which can take years!), they are picked by hand or with a sickle—they don’t come off the trees as apples do! The nut fruit has a hard shell that protects the nut inside. The shell is removed to get the nut.
Producers
Cashew Nuts have been a staple in many cultures for thousands of years, and they are still one of the most popular nuts in the world today. They take around 3 years to harvest and boom in the spring season. The largest producers of cashew nuts are Ivory Coast and India.
