Production

The raisin production begins after the seedless grapes are harvested. The grapes are harvested between August and September when they are considered to be at their optimum sweetness. The raisins are then produced by drying grapes using either of the three methods; sun drying, shade drying, and mechanical drying. The drying process takes about two to three weeks. The dried grapes are then processed and cleaned to remove any dirt and impurities. Finally, they are packaged and bulk raisins for sale are ready to be dispatched.

Producers

The largest producer of raisins is Turkey. The country has a long history of producing raisins, and it continues to do so today. After that, the USA and Iran are the countries in second and third place producing raisins. Apart from this, South Africa’s Northern Cape region produces the highest which is 90% of South Africa’s domestic raisin production.

Properties

  1. Raisins are rich in fiber that is effective in providing a laxative effect to the stomach and keeping the digestive system functioning correctly, preventing acidity and bloating problems. Also, fiber helps in weight loss.
  2. Boron, a micronutrient is present in raisins that helps in promoting bone health and is essential for proper bone formation as well as its maintenance.
  3. Packed with calcium, iron, and vitamin C, which are highly crucial nutrients to boost immunity while helping the body fight off infections.
  4. The presence of resveratrol in raisins is vital in removing toxic cells from the blood and purifying it leading to the prevention of wrinkles on the skin. Also, the raisins help maintain hair and hair loss problems like dandruff and scalp itchiness.
  5. Raisins are rich in phytochemicals that are responsible for increasing cardiovascular health parameters by affecting lipoprotein metabolism and inflammation response.

Uses

Raisins are one of the most commonly used ingredients in baking. They add a sweet, rich flavor to foods and have various uses in recipes. They are used in various baking recipes, including bread, muffins, pancakes, and desserts. Use them as a substitute for other dried fruits like apricots or cranberries.

Here are some of the other ways you can use raisins in your baking:

  1. Add them to your cookie dough or cake batter. This will make your baked goods more moist and flavorful.
  2. Use them as a garnish for cakes, cupcakes, cookies, brownies, or other desserts. These make a great topping for cakes and pastries because they add moisture, texture, and flavor to the cake without adding too much fat or calories which would prevent it from rising properly during the baking time (which means no more dry cake!).
  3. A raisin glaze is a popular way to add sweetness to fruit salads and desserts such as cobblers or ice cream sundaes. You can use it on any kind of fruit you want!

And finally, add them to your breading mixture for fried foods like chicken nuggets and french fries. The raisin will help the bread stick better to the meat or vegetable being fried, which means less mess and more enjoyment!
